Connect an agent

Choose your app · Approve on your device · Keep secrets out of chat

Startr puts useful updates from your agent on your Lock Screen. The agent runs elsewhere; Startr displays its updates. Pairing does not give it your habit, Health, or location history, and never authorizes purchases or sending messages.

Before you pair

1. Install Startr from the App Store. Available in the United States at launch.
2. Open Startr → Settings → Agent Cards. If this installation is not connected yet, tap Connect an agent. Startr creates a private device connection and anonymous setup identity—no name, email, or password.
3. Optional: choose See a sample card. The sample needs no pairing or network.

Free: one approved agent and one live card per installation. Pro: up to five approved agents and five live cards total per installation, not five per agent. See pricing. Restoring an eligible purchase does not automatically sync agent connections to another device.

If you already have a working connection, keep it. You do not need to replace it just to use this guide.

Claude or Grok — browser approval

Add Startr once in your agent app, approve it in Startr, and use it across supported chats. Have your iPhone or iPad nearby before you start. This is a custom connector, not a claim of provider endorsement.

Public MCP server URL — copy the complete URL into the provider's server URL field:

This URL is public, not a password. You do not need the private Authorization header for this path. Enter the short invitation only on Startr's browser setup page at auth.startrapp.com.

Claude

1. Open Customize → Connectors → + → Add custom connector.
2. Name it Startr, enter the public MCP URL above, and choose Add. Leave optional client ID and client secret fields empty.
3. Find Startr and choose Connect, then complete device approval below.

For Team or Enterprise, an Owner first adds the URL in Organization settings → Connectors → Add → Custom → Web. Members then connect individually from Customize → Connectors.

Anthropic documents custom connectors for Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise; Free allows one custom connector. Our completed device test used an individual account, not every plan or organization setup. Claude's current instructions.

Grok

1. Open Grok's connectors page, then choose New Connector → Custom.
2. Name it Startr and enter the public MCP URL above.
3. Continue through authentication. If Grok shows manual OAuth fields, use the values below, then complete device approval.

For Business or Enterprise, a team admin first uses console.x.ai → Grok Business → Connectors → + Add Connector → Other. Members then connect from Grok's connectors page.

Approve in Startr — both providers

The browser setup lasts about 10 minutes. Create the invitation only when the browser is ready; that invitation lasts about five minutes.

1. In Startr → Settings → Agent Cards, find Pair with a supported setup tool and choose Create setup invitation.
2. On auth.startrapp.com, in Connect Claude · Startr or Connect Grok · Startr, enter the fresh eight-character invitation. Read the card-only access description, check its consent box, and choose Continue to device approval.
3. Back in Startr, choose Refresh pairing requests. Scroll below Agent connections to Approval required in the current app.
4. Compare the entire code in the browser with the pending request in Startr. Choose Codes match — allow only for an exact match. Reject a mismatch or a request you did not start. The agent's name is not proof.
5. Return to the browser, choose I've approved it — check again, then Finish connecting when it says Ready to connect.
6. Return to Claude or Grok and check that Startr is connected. In Claude, enable it for the conversation under + → Connectors if needed.

The browser cannot approve on your behalf. Do not share screenshots containing private setup links, headers, or account details.

Try one useful card

After tools are available, ask:

Use Startr to show progress on this task. Update the card at meaningful milestones and end it when you're finished.

Look for the card on your Lock Screen. Apple controls where and when Live Activities appear on supported devices. A later supported chat can use the saved connector; the provider may ask you to enable its tools there.

The connection can refresh between sessions. You may need to reconnect after inactivity or credential expiry; this authorization lasts no longer than 30 days without reconnecting. Read Startr's privacy details before connecting.

If setup stalls

• No approval request? Refresh pairing requests on the same Startr device that created the invitation, then scroll below Agent connections. Do not approve a different request because its name looks right.
• Invitation unavailable, expired, or “pending agent not found”? Check and refresh Startr's pending requests first. Do not repeatedly submit the old invitation or approve a stale row. After confirming the old setup did not connect, start one fresh setup with a new invitation.
• Connected, but no tools? Confirm Startr is enabled in that provider's current chat. A normal chat cannot install a connector just by reading a URL.
• Purchase active, but cards need attention? Use Check card access in Startr. If it persists, contact support with your app version and whether it came from TestFlight or the App Store. Do not buy again, reinstall, or reset working connections as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Path A — Short invitation with a trusted setup helper

Use this only when your agent app has an installed, trusted Startr setup helper that can request access from chat. This is separate from the Claude/Grok browser flow above.

1. In Startr, choose Create setup invitation → Copy invitation for chat.
2. Paste it into that supported agent chat—not a generic browser chat.
3. Refresh pairing requests in Startr and compare the confirmation codes on both sides. In the current app, Approval required is below Agent connections.
4. Choose Codes match — allow only if the codes match. Reject anything you did not start.

The invitation expires in about five minutes and contains no reusable key. A normal chat cannot install tools just by reading it.

Path B — Private-header connector for compatible MCP apps

Keep using this path if it already works for you. It requires an app that supports a custom MCP server with an Authorization request header; it has been tested in Codex desktop. Compatibility depends on the specific app and connector settings, not just the agent's name.

1. Under Persistent agent connector in Startr, enter a name for the agent.
2. Choose Approve and prepare connector → Approve connector.
3. In the agent app's connector settings:
   • Server URL → paste Startr's Copy server URL value for this path.
   • Request header name → Authorization
   • Header value → paste the complete Copy private Authorization header value.
4. Save, enable the connector for the session, and verify Startr tools appear.

Never paste the private Authorization header into chat, email, Slack, screenshots, or OAuth client fields. Keep it only in connector settings. The public Claude/Grok URL above is not a replacement for this path's copied server URL. If the app has no custom-header option, use its supported browser flow or ask support.

Disconnecting

When you want to stop a connection's Startr access, open Startr → Settings → Agent Cards and revoke that specific connection. If it hosts an active Shared Cue, end sharing first. Do not assume that removing a connector only in Claude or Grok also revokes its Startr access.

Keep working connections in place during unrelated setup or purchase troubleshooting.

Shared Cue followers

To follow someone else's Cue, install Startr and open their invitation on your device. No agent, CLI, or host pairing required. Following is read-only.
